A Tsunami of Concrete

CDI, acting as Explosives Subcontractor to Main Demolition Contractor, Control Services, LLC of Jersey City, New Jersey, performs the preparation for and successful explosives felling of four (4), 6-story reinforced concrete buildings and two (2), 7-story buildings totaling 1,500,000 sq ft of structure in Bayonne, New Jersey on Sunday, August 8, 2021. A total of 7,184 holes were drilled and loaded by CDI with 6,400 lb of explosives and 10.2 miles of detonating cord in the non-electric initiation system to bring the structure down atop the 5’ high loading dock elevation of the 1st Floor slab. CDI’s explosives operations will facilitate the Main Contractor's fast-track removal of debris to support construction of a UPS terminal which will serve New York City and the other boroughs by ferry, rather than having their trucks suffer delays on bridges and in tunnels.

CDI, acting as Explosives Subcontractor to Main Environmental and Demolition Contractor, Demo Plus of Nashville, Tennessee and Katmai Government Services of Smyrna, Tennessee, successfully imploded the two (2), reinforced concrete dormitories in Nashville, Tennessee on Saturday, July 31, 2021, without damage to Bellevue while keeping the well-fragmented debris within the demolition site to facilitate it’s fast-track, post-implosion removal. Implosion dust was cleaned up within three (3) hours and the adjacent hotel and restaurants were able to open shortly thereafter.

The 34-story tower was 370' tall. CDI loaded 1,900 lbs of explosives in 2,300 locations over 14 floors of the structure and installed over 700 delays using a non-electric initiation system to carefully control the fall of the structure while maximizing debris fragmentation to facilitate removal of the tidy 70' tall pile of post-implosion debris.
