One James River Plaza
PROJECT OUTLINE
In the fall of 2019, Dominion Energy moved from its One James River Plaza (OJRP) Tower in downtown Richmond, Virginia to their new, all glass façade, 600 Canal Street Tower located directly next door. Joint Venture Hourigan and Clayco Corp. was contracted to clear the OJRP property, which included the demolition of the 340’ tall, 517,000 sf Tower and the Plaza, and the 3-story deep parking garage that filled the site, bounded by 7th, 8th, Carey and Canal Streets. D.H. Griffin Wrecking Co., Inc. (DHG) was awarded the project and they contracted with CDI to design and perform the felling of the Tower, including provision of $25,000,000 General Liability insurance covering CDI’s implosion of the structure.
PROJECT PLANNING
CDI first worked with DHG and their structural engineer subcontractor, Thornton Tomasetti, to satisfy the implosion design and deliverable requirements of the specifications, permitting Hourigan and Clayco and their consultants to review CDI’s approach to the implosion operation. CDI’s plan was accepted, and work began immediately to prepare the structure for implosion.
Following environmental remediation, DHG completed selective soft-strip of shot floors and prepared the building per CDI’s preparation design, to contain the building to its site footprint and yield the type of debris which DHG would be able to process following implosion operations.
THE DETONATION
CDI loaded a total of 3,215 lb of explosives in 2,455 holes drilled in columns and beams on 12 levels of the structure. The implosion was carried out safely and successfully at 7:02 AM on Saturday, May 30, 2020.
